10 for $10.00 : Grocery Injustice!

Are the Grocery Stores Run By The Illuminati?

10 for $10 seems to be the newest grocery bargaining trend over the past 2 years.  Everybody is doing it; major grocery chains, smaller stores even Mom and Pops stores are on the pricing band wagon.

But what grocery items can you get 10 of for $10?  Well popular “shelf” items like salad dressings, canned goods, condiments, boxed foods, frozen foods, sometimes cheeses, sugary juices and every blue moon, fruit.  Basically anything processed!  With the rising costs fresh non-processed foods like produce and meats like poultry, fish, shell fish, beef, pork and wild game meats; healthy eaters and dieter’s alike are facing a financial dilemma at the grocery store check out.

Everything costs too DAMN much!  Gas today as I write, is nearing $4.00/gallon in my local area!  Chicken Breast at my local grocery store was $1.99/lb, 2 Cucumbers were $1.35, and a selection of my favorite freeze dried Herbs (Tarragon, Rosemary, Thyme, Garlic Essence, and Dill Weed) alone yesterday cost me $26.44 and that was not in bulk!!!   So what are healthier eaters and dieters like me to do?   Do we continue to eat the processed foods packed with Sodium, preservatives and saturated fats and other chemicals added in production for longer shelf life?  Or do we dip into our already limited disposable income to make sure we are buying proper selections at the grocer?

This is a thought that plagues me each time I grocery shop.  In my individual case, I shop at least once per week because I have not yet mastered the art of deciding what I am going to eat for an entire month at a time.  I watch the prices and try to adjust to the trends.  For instance I know that Chicken goes on sale most anywhere every 12 weeks.  So as long as I adjust to that 12 week cycle I am able to stock up on Chicken at the “sale” price.  Fresh and Organic veggies are another story.  I rarely find it possible to ever get a price break on something as simple as broccoli or Romaine Lettuce.

I have a theory about the price of groceries and why fresh foods are much more expensive.  A theory other than the hyped “trucking / delivery / stocking costs” that consumers are fed.  Want to know what I think?  Ok, here it is.  I think it is Corporate World’s way of keeping themselves profitable.  Ok, ok, I know I am about to sound like some radical lunatic conspiracy theorist right about now, but follow along for a moment if you do not mind.

The more processed, frozen and canned foods we put into our diets the bigger our waist line gets, thus prompting us to do one of two things – 1) Shop ($pend) for larger clothes or 2) Buy ($pend) Diet Products; and on the extreme end Buy ($pend) a larger vehicle.  Furthermore the medical community is also profiting from this “food revolution”.   Foods high in sodium = High Blood Pressure (which can lead to or increase any number of other ailments) = Doctors Visits ($$), Prescriptions ($$), Purchase ($$) of foods that are “marketed” as “healthy alternatives”.   I think I even saw a commercial for a weight loss clinic that said you can lose 10lbs for $10!!!

So what are we healthy eaters and dieters to do about our inflated grocery bills?  I suggest doing the following:
  1. Determine the cycle of sales on fresh meats (including fish) stock up and freeze.
  2. Only buy the Veggies and Fruits you are definitely going to eat within the next 2-4 days (the longer they sit in your refrigerator the more likely you are to toss them because they have gone bad.)
  3. Shop Farmers Markets / Start A Garden (seasonal)
  4. Befriend a local butcher (You get more bee’s with honey)
  5. Watch the Sale Papers Closely (In most markets new weekly sales begin each Sunday)
  6. Clip Coupons – And Use Them
  7. Buy Less Beverages – Soda, Juices and Bottle Water have little nutritional value and can take up over 50% of your grocery bill.
  8. Shop the Perimeters - The perimeters are where you’ll find the fresh produce, bread, milk, eggs, yogurt, cheese, etc.  This should be the main focus of your meal plan and grocery budget. If you start in the middle your money will be spent before you get to the items your healthy / diet lifestyle require.
  9. Meal Plan – buy only what you need to create your meal.
  10. Check your receipt – Cashier’s make errors, and things are not always priced properly!

A Grocery Shopping we will go! And Good Luck!

Fat Ass Update (08-07-2011)

It's Payday! My commitment, dedication and hard work are paying off like a winning lotto ticket.

Food Choices
Food is simple.  Avoiding the carbs is painless and effortless, at this point. And high flavor, high protein items are what I crave these days.  My biggest food craving is extra sharp cheddar cheese cubes.  The day just does not seem complete until I have devoured like three cubes; anything more just seems like gluttony.

Breakfast is in I believe week three of failure.  But this week I plan to have cheese cubes to pack along for a light breakfast.  I think the thought of cooking and eating warm food so early is not yet something I can adjust my mind to.  Yes, I know mind over matter and shit.

Clothes
Praise Him! Diet Jesus is working miracles now I have bagged up my  3X - 18W clothes to pay forward since they are mostly too big.  That was about 1/4 of my summer wardrobe; and I am teetering toward wearing my regular size 18's and even into some of my 16W clothes.  Since at some point or another over the past 3 years I have been between a size 14W and disgusting size of 3X I still have plenty of clothes to wear and choose from.  One of the hardest things is giving away some  of my clothes because they are basically new and ever so cute.  But I cannot go back to those sizes so they must go.    I have planned so send some of my  newer items and two really cute after-five dresses to StormyVawn, a fellow blogger and twitter (@stormyvawn) friend who is on week  #2 of the #FridayJeans tradition inspired by me.  She even posted the pics to her Facebook "Like" Page.  It was very motivating.
Exercise
Well finally those dusty dumbbells got put to use this week.  I have found the best time for me to work out is late in the evening.  My colleague mentioned that she watches Netflix while she works out.  Wow what a great idea!  So I too embraced this concept.  On average each evening this week I have done about 4-5 miles on the recumbent bike while taking in a episode of "Nip Tuck" on Netflix; followed by a dumbbell work out and some stretching.  I wake up feeling amazing!  I just need to keep in mind how pivotal exercise is to this lifestyle, especially since I pretty much sit at my desk 8-9 hours a day.

How I Feel  I am reminded by my own thoughts and observations how powerful the mental thoughts and observation calculations impact my desire to continue with this lifestyle change.  It seems like every woman I see these days is a minimum of 50lbs overweight.  Its disgusting to me.  I am almost repulsed by these women, really.  I take notice to every detail from how their too tight pants tug at their bodies to the 8 pack of fat rolls showing through their shirts.  Even how some tug at the front of their shirts constantly; a sure sign of a lacking in confidence department.

My Mental Health is definitely improving as well, not that I thought I was psycho or anything.  I have embraced the art of meditation and focusing on my goals when I have quite time to myself.  Even when sitting in my office, I speak to myself with encouraging words.  I am my biggest motivator.

I catch myself checking out my reflection in every window, and mirror I pass.  Checking to see how much different, if any I look.  And the person smiling back at me is looking and feeling good.  What a good feeling.

My progress is amazing, hard work, effort and motivation are paying off.

Fat Ass Update (7-30-11)

Ahhh yes, results are starting to become noticeable.  This week quite a few people made comment on my weight loss "have you lost weight?" or "girl you are really coming down."  As much as I wanted to brag and jump for joy, I just humbly replied "I feel great."  I hate when people brag about their weight loss, just a personal pet peeve.

Food Choices
I went shopping in the beginning of the week and grabbed a few items.  For lunch everyday this week I have enjoyed a tuna salad at my favorite Coney Island near my work.

I am still a breakfast failure.  I actually have 3 1/2 dozen eggs  and a package of unopened bacon in the fridge so its almost a sure bet that I will be eating breakfast pretty well for the next week or more as I hate wasting food.  I still have not cheated one bit! And really it is not hard to avoid carbs at all, pretty much mind over matter.  Do I want potato's, rice and pasta? Or Fat Elbows and Back Titties?  Hmmm that's a no brain-er, for sure!

Clothes
Hallelujah! Diet Jesus has answered my prayers and my size 20's are no longer wearable because they simply fall off, sag in the ass and have lost their shape on me.  In short they are wayyy to big.  I intend to start bagging them up to pass along.  My clothes are all relatively new since I have a shopping addiction, so some lucky chunky chick will be very chic.  I am down to wearing my size 18's which I noted yesterday have about another two weeks of wear and then they will also be going. to the bye-bye bag.  I do plan (just for fun and motivation to send my size 18 #FridayJeans to StormyVawn, a fellow blogger and twitter (@stormyvawn) friend who has this week taken me up on the #FridayJeans tradition.

Exercise
I have a few excuses for not exercising to my full potential this week.
Excuse List:
1. It was too hot out to walk, with heat advisories and 100+ degree temps.
2. I woke up too late each morning to get any work out in.
3. I was tired each day after work.

Yeah these are some dumb ass excuses and I suck.  Largely I can't figure out a good excuse why I didn't exercise.  But I did feel the results of not exercising.  So I need to get back on it.  Last Sunday, I did ride my recumbent bike for about 52mins which was a little over five miles.  I do need an exercise plan though; this week I will work from one that I intend to write today.

How I Feel  Small changes from last week, are now big changes this week, and I must say the most noticed change this week was the way my blouses fit in the upper arm area.  No more circulation cut off, and they are actually fitting the way they are supposed to.  Still appetite has shrunk size-ably; to the point where I forget to eat all together (which may I mention is not a good idea, I need to stay consistent with eating regular meals -- and make myself eat some fucking breakfast.) Diet Jesus was really in the prayer answering business this week.

My progress is amazing, hard work, effort and motivation are paying off.

Fat Ass Update (7-22-11)

I am own inspiration this week! I looked at some pictures taken in May 2011 today and I am more motivated than ever to get rid of this fat, and change my lifestyle to a healthier active one.  I am down around an average of 19lbs total to date; I have lost about 1" around my chest so I'm down from a 40DD to a 38DD.  Shit, really glad I have not lost any letters Ha Ha!

Food Choices
I have been Christopher Columbus in the grocery store this week exploring the fresh produce department and staking  claim on it's virginity like a savage beast.  And no, I still have not had any carbs!  I haven't cheated at all; I refuse to  Cheat On myself, because Cheaters SUCK!  Once again, Breakfast has been a big ass joke!  How in the fuck do working people get up, and function well enough to cook and eat breakfast while capturing the last 30 minutes of sleep by beating he snooze button on the alarm clock?  It's all fucking Greek to me! I did not venture into Satan's haven (Walgreen's) for any Chardonnay up until yesterday only to find out the damn wine is now 2/ $10.00 -- those evil bastards.  I did have some wine last night since I have a long weekend with pre-scheduled day off work.

Clothes
I went from a lazy dresser to Curious George this week.  I picked out items that were previously too tight or just plain ole too damn small. Like I told you yesterday those brown Capri Pants a size Jr. XL were a great fit.  And everything I tried on and wore fit wonderfully.  I am my own motivation.  My bra's are getting a bit big; I'm bitter sweet on that one, yeah I'm losing back fat but damn now I gotta pop another $36.50 per bra to replace the motherfuckers.  Shit!

Exercise
Had I not been such a show off  with my fucking insanity walk; and wanting everyone to know that I hold multiple degree's from the Ivy League School of Rah-Tards I would have been much more productive in the exercise department.  Today my ankle is just now feeling better.  That means I missed three days of exercise.  Fuck!

How I Feel  I've noticed a lot of small changes.  It was easier to wake up and get going this week.  Probably because I did not drink wine, and I was enjoying playing Curious George in my closets. My attitude and demeanor were a bit more humble this week.  Maybe due to me being really busy?  And lastly, my appetite has shrunk size-ably; to the point where I forget to eat all together (which may I mention is not a good idea, I need to stay consistent with eating regular meals.)  Oh well! I will do better next week; I am no miracle worker.

Like a bottle of fine wine I get better with time, just see for yourself!

Fat Ass Update (7-15-11)

Get The Fuck Outta Here!  Last week's update does not have shit on THIS week.  Sit back and hold on tight there has been such a drastic change from last Friday.

Food Choices
I haven't had a single carb break down, not one!  Breakfast was a big issue this week because I did not plan well enough to prep it at night, and I really was not in the mood in the mornings to cook before work. Walgreens still has that damn really good Liberty Chardonnay on sale for a mere $5.49 for the bigger bottle; but this week I think I may have had far less wine than I had last week.

Clothes
Yet again I was a pretty lazy dresser.  The now famous "Friday Jeans" that I have vowed to wear every Friday to gauge my weight loss were much baggier in the ass today!  Hoorayyy.  The thigh area was loose fitting and they were a tad bit longer (did I shrink)?  Lets not forget the all important waist of the jeans that had about 2 inches of extra space between my skin and the pant!  Had I not skipped two days of exercise I wonder if they would have fit even bigger?   Also, a pair of khaki's were fitting a lot looser in the ass and thigh area, the waist on those were not cutting off my circulation.

Exercise
The weekend and the beginning of the week were far more active in the exercise department.  I managed to get my 2 mile minimum in each day; up until Wednesday when Aunt Flo showed up.  The dread of her visit made me lethargic, and tired so Wednesday and Thursday I didn't do a damn movement outside of my normal activity.  Today is still up in the air as I am fighting to keep my eyes open as I type.

How I Feel
This week I was not feeling so swell all week.  Between little life stresses, battling a sinus infection, and the unannounced always expected visit from my Aunt Flo, I was pretty much a wreck.  Today I feel much better -- probably because it is Friday and I know that I have a few days to rest and rejuvenate.  I didn't feel the bloating from Aunt Flo's baggage nearly as bad as I typically do, it was far less of a problem this "visit".  And I can no longer rest my elbows on my muffin top when I sit down -- bummer, I think not!

I was thinking back to June 19, 2011 when I started this fight.  I am proud of myself, I am sure there are some fuckers out there with some bullshit to say but I don't need to hear it; I can do whatever I put my mind to I have Faith!

The change is a slow process, I didn't get fat over night and I am sticking with it! Can hardly wait to re-evaluate myself this time next week.

Fat Ass Update (7/8/11)

A quick update, this (work) week has been a successful journey for the eating portion.  I still have not managed to kick my wine habit but it has decreased.

Food Choices
Walgreens really needs to stop putting this Liberty Chardonnay on sale for a mere $5.49 for the bigger bottle.  I have not ingested any foods or beverages not on the induction list of the Atkins diet (except wine).  Today however, I will have some sort of orange juice or grapefruit since I feel like I am catching a lovely summer cold.

Clothes
I did not notice too many clothes fitting much differently other than the pants I wore on Monday; which looked great on me by the way. I have been a lazy dresser this week so not really much in the fashion update department.  I am wearing my coined "Friday" jeans today.  I am determined to wear these jeans every Friday as a guide to see how they are fitting differently.

How I Feel
Feeling great, more energy (except at work -- which is a mind over matter thing -- I think I need to take a vacation.) I haven't felt bloated in about 2 weeks, even the typical "monthly bloating" was substantially different.  My fat rolls are feeling softer more like cotton balls than a bouncing ball.

The change is a slow process, I didn't get fat over night and I am sticking with it! Can hardly wait to re-evaluate myself this time next week.
